David is the President and Founder of The Kliman Group and co-founder of the Events Industry Council’s APEX COVID Business Recovery Task Force.
We are also pleased to welcome Rochelle Kopp (Founder & Managing Principal, Japan Intercultural Consulting) who will host a presentation on “Communicating with Japanese: Bridging the Cultural Gap.” With extensive experience in consulting global firms and helping Japanese companies with their global operations, her presentation will be helpful to anyone who deals with cross-cultural communication – newbies and veterans alike.
Keynote: The Changing Landscape of Events After COVID-19
As the founder and President of The Kliman Group, David creates think tanks and performs in-depth research for event industry organizations, including destination marketing organizations, convention centers, and hotel companies. In March 2020, David co-founded the Events Industry Council APEX COVID Business Recovery Task Force to address the immediate need for guidance on accepted practices, to restart the industry, and to examine long-term how we can adapt and transform for future stability, relevance, and resiliency of the events industry. In this keynote, David discusses the changing events industry, how the current challenges create new opportunities, how the EIC task force is compiling and creating resources for global use, and what events might look like in the future.

David has served as International Chairman of MPI and on the White House Council of Travel and Tourism. He’s been awarded MPI’s International Planner of the Year and was named Top 25 Influencer of the Meetings Industry by Northstar Meetings Group in 2020.
David’s in-depth knowledge of SPJA, its event, and stakeholder communities was developed during a one-year research consultancy with the organization.
Communicating with Japanese: Bridging the Cultural Gap
People from other countries who interact with Japanese often say that communication issues can be particularly tricky. In this session, management consultant Rochelle Kopp will explain the “triple whammy” that can make communicating with Japanese challenging – and what you can do to overcome it. Whether you’re new to working with Japanese or a veteran, this session will give you ideas that you can use right away for strengthening relationships.
About Rochelle Kopp
A native of Chicago, Rochelle has been going back and forth between Japan and the U.S. her entire adult life, beginning her career at a consulting firm in the U.S. and handling global corporate communications at a large Japanese bank. She founded Japan Intercultural Consulting to support the rapid globalization she observed in the Japanese business environment.
As a consultant, Rochelle works to help clients increase profitability and employee engagement through improved communication and working relationships in multicultural environments. She is currently focused on helping Japanese companies be more successful in their global operations, supporting effective human resource management practices, organization development, and cross-cultural training, and teambuilding. She also works frequently with global firms that have Japanese customers, joint venture partners, and suppliers.
Rochelle is the author of The Rice-Paper Ceiling: Breaking Through Japanese Corporate Culture, The Lowdown: Business Etiquette Japan, Valley Speak: Deciphering the Jargon of Silicon Valley, the upcoming Creating Engaged Employees in Japan, and over thirty-five books in Japanese. She writes regularly for the Japan Times, the Asahi Shimbun, the Nikkei Weekly, and Newsweek Japan.
Project Anime: Global 2020 will take place virtually on November 17-18 and can be attended from anywhere in the world. With a theme of “Evolving with the Events Industry,” the conference will feature two uniquely-curated programming tracks, one geared towards event organizers and another aimed at industry professionals. As the landscape of the industry changes rapidly in response to current events, events and businesses have been compelled to adapt accordingly. This has given rise to new uncharted ventures and opportunities, including virtual/hybrid events and unique digital engagement.
